So You Don’t Have To

The beginning of that sentence is, “I do stupid things.”  Well, silly anyway.

Amazon has this system where you can run a “giveaway.”  I wanted to try it out.  Now, the silly part isn’t what happened – I gained 132 followers to my twitter (@AhZhillAy) account.  Nor the fact that I set the system to give an ebook to every 12th person.

See, the book is about finding your target market, and only pitching your marketing messages to them.  The silly thing was running the giveaway and getting the contest entrants.  They’re not my target market!  They’re just people who like getting stuff for free.  I can almost guarantee you not one of the winners has even opened the ebook, much less read it all the way through.

I will do this again, for sure.  But I will have entrants retweet a message that essentially broadcasts my lead magnet, so I at least have a chance at adding people to my email list.  And I’ll damn sure raise the number of winners from 1 in 12 to 1 in 500.  Even those people might not be my ultimate target market, but they will have come because they saw a tweet for my lead magnet, not because they wanted to win something.
