No matter how minor, you should stop and celebrate your successes on the way to achieving your resolution.
If you’re attempting to lose weight, and you’re down 5 pounds, take yourself to a movie. You’re training for a marathon and you push your training to 10 miles a day, knock back a stiff one. You’re writing your first draft and you complete 7,000 words in one day, take your wife shopping. Do something you wouldn’t normally do – something you reserve for special occasions. Because whatever resolution you’re working towards, it’s for self improvement purposes, right? So all your hard work and determination should be recognized and rewarded. You should be happy about moving towards the goal you set for yourself. Show yourself a good time, and celebrate.
We ask ourselves the existential question, “What is the meaning of life?” While I don’t have a definitive answer for that, one of the reasons we’re living is to make the best versions of ourselves possible, and to have a good time doing it, so it’s okay to have a spontaneous celebration every once in a while. And it’s also quite all right to plan celebrations to mark certain milestones. That’s one way you can motivate yourself to keep moving forward toward that goal!
